Warm-up activity
After greeting the teacher asks ‘ What kind of a house would you build if you were a millionaire?’ On the blackboard there is a grammar structure written before the class ‘ If I were a millionaire I would…’
The teacher asks some students eliciting more extended answers.
Brainstorming
Then he offers to think over a question ‘ What is an ideal house? The work is organized in groups and after 3 minutes discussion answers are presented and written on the blackboard for comparison. To make work more fruitful handouts for vocabulary extension are distributed.( Appendix A). In the end the general idea of an ideal house is formed.
Describe an ideal house
One of the students is asked to describe an ideal house using the results of brainstorming
Fallingwater by F.L.Wright.- discussion
The pictures of the FW house are demonstrated and the question is put-
How close is this house to an ideal house?
First the students are offered to say what they see
Second they are asked what facilities can be in the house.
Then students are asked what adjectives can be applied to this house.
At some point of the discussion it becomes clear that students need additional information and they are offered a text for reading
Reading for details
Students are given texts ( handouts B, from Wikipedia) and are given task – to fill in information gaps on handouts C. If the group is multilevel, the work can be organized in groups and the task can be divided between groups (7 questions each) or it can be done individually depending on the class level.
Complete the sentence
After reading the text students discuss their answers and after that the teacher asks students what features of an ideal house are seen in this building. Then the task is given Complete the sentence
If I had bought a FW house I would …have done… ( add smth or change smth).
The grammar construction is written on the blackboard.
Watching video
After that students are offered to watch a video created by a talented programmer as a 3D model ling and demonstrates the process of house construction.
The task is- to tick the objects seen while watching the film ( handout D) , but it is to be done after watching the film as the tempo of the film is rather high. The best way is to do the work in groups.
Video discussion
After the video- task is completed and the results are discussed in groups (2minutes) they are presented to the class in turn : group 1, group2, group 3.
Create a poem.
The teacher leads the students to the conclusion about the information got at the lesson and about the impressions about the FW.
After some sharing impressions the teacher offers the students to write a poem about the FW. House using the rules of a ‘think way’ poem ( Handout E)
1-st line- one word a noun determining the object
2-nd line- two words adjectives characterizing the object
3-d line three words verbs or phrases showing your personal attitude towards the object
4-th line - one word the essence or idea of the object
Students write poems on separate sheets of paper ( maybe of different colors) while the teacher sticks the picture of the FW house in the middle of a big paper and every poem is glued to this big paper, forming an unforgettable project devoted to the lesson
Lesson assessment
